In September last year, South Africa‘s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT), already the largest coal export terminal in the world, announced the commencement of the Phase V expansion project, estimated at R1.1B and aimed at increasing throughput capacity from 72 to 91 mtpa by the end of the first half of 2009. Included in this expansion is a fifth tandem tippler for offloading, increased stockyard capacity, a stacker/ reclaimer, supporting infrastructure and an extension of the dedicated quay of a sixth berth that will increase the quay wall from 1600m to 1900m.
Apart from the new berth, handling and storage equipment and associated control systems, RBCT is also investing in new terminal management control systems to ensure that the massive increase in theoretical capacity can be achieved without bottlenecks and glitches....
