Brazil: key growth area for global metallurgical coal market

While Brazil’s imports of met coal continue to grow, plans are in hand to increase the role of coal in its energy mix - traditionally dominated by hydroelectric power - with global giant Vale to the fore

In May, delegates at the second Coaltrans Brazil Conference (12-13 May, Rio de Janeiro) will have a lot to discuss as global prices for metallurgical coal, iron ore and steel continue to climb.

Although coal mining and coal-generated electricity have never been large activities in Brazil, it is a large importer of metallurgical coal for its steel industry....
