In the past ten years, Indonesia has become a major producer of steam coal and a significant exporter, and its progress well documented in these pages.
Its results for 1999 are estimated to be production of 73mt, and exports of54mt. This is a growth of12mt and 7mt respectively. Nearly 80 per cent of the exports were to the Asian region, but probably less than 3mt went to India. This situation relating to India is expected to change because Indonesia has continuing plans to expand production and exports. The reasons for this is hat, five years from now, Indonesia's annual production capacity could be as much as 110mt. Of this, between 7580mt will be for the export market, and increase of over 20mt.
