A just-published independent report suggests UK coal production is in its final throes of decline. Two-thirds of an already depleted industry will close in the next two years because the government has failed to rebalance its energy programme.
For decades in the UK, actions of successive governments have been closing profitable coalfired power stations and the profitable mines that supply them. This continues and 60 per cent of remaining deepmine coal production will close during this and next year, says an independent report by CLG Energy Consultants (CLG) published in late January. About half the production closures will happen this year....
