Asian market gets confident

Steam coal cargos rose in 1999 as the Asian economies recovered - faster than had been forecast by many - and power demand surged upwards during the year's second half. With CoalTrans Asia taking place this month, what will be the talking points?

Since the participants in the Pacific coal markets last met in Sydney at CoalTrans Asia almost a year ago, the Indonesian coal industry has been continuing to meet demand both domestically and internationally. In 1999, the country produced 71.0mt on mainly thermal coal. Of this, just over 50mt was exported to markets as diverse as Japan, India, Europe the USA and South America. The local market continued its rapid growth as the Indonesian economy has shown strong growth since the election of President Wahisd in 1999....
