Pacific market: big increases for both coking and thermal coal

The Pacific market's rise following five long bear years has been rapid, with prices returning to near their 1995 levels in only six short months. The difference in prices in just a year is quite remarkable.

What a difference a year makes, as the old song says. Around 12 months ago, the price of thermal coal ex-Newcastle had fallen below $20.00/t FOBT. Some poorer coking coal brands were being placed at near to $30.000/t FOBT. Today, the situation is vastly different with thermal coal receiving a premium of some 70 per cent over these levels and coking coal a similar level....
