South Africa: Expand or lose it?

With the South African coal industry dominated by three companies, a new concern is the government's desire to take undeveloped resources away from private owners under a 'use it or lose it' threat.

Total coal exports from South Africa have continued to grow throughout the 1990's from 50.3mta in 1990, to 69.9mta by 2000. But 2001 saw the South Africans lose market share in the Pacific Rim (mainly Japan and South Korea) and Asia (especially India). As a result, total exports were expected to drop marginally to 68.4mt....
