Huge stockpiles of coal will be stored at the back of the Huntly Power Station in New Zealand this winter as owner Genesis Energy has more than doubled its order intake from Solid Energy in 2003.
Solid Energy will supply 800,000t of coal to Huntly in the coming year from north Waikato mines, a dramatic increase over the 340,000t delivered in 2002. Longer term, the company hopes to increase the amount of coal supplied to more than 1 mtpa. In the meantime Genesis Power plans to import another 500,000t of thermal coal from Australia and Indonesia. It will be shipped to Tauranga and sent by rail to Huntly, which sits on top of a coalfield....
