Coal output in Russia for the first six months of 2003 totalled 134.6 mt, up 12.6 per cent from the corresponding period a year ago. Of the total, 63.6 percent came from open-pit mines, according to Russian Energy Ministry press service (see also page 33).
The output rise in the January-June period was attributed to increased demand, especially over autumn and winter. Exports of coal in the same period came to 28 mt, up 41.1 per cent from the same period of 2002. In all, 247 km of new tunnelling were completed in the period, up 0.4 percent from the same period of 2002....
