As New Zealand announced record coal production of 5 mt in 2003, government approval of Pike River Coal Company’s new mine near Greymouth on the South Island’s West Coast is likely to lead to the construction of the country’s second export coal port at Marlborough’s Shakespeare Bay.
The project envisages coal being trucked from the mine to the shallow-draught port at Greymouth, from which it would be barged to the deepwater Shakespeare Bay, near Picton.The Port of Marlborough, which has a management consultancy arrangement with the North Island’s Port of Tauranga, has not decided on the size of the proposed coal facility but says total investment could range between NZ$14 mill and NZ$30 mill.
