Two major accidents within a month have left the BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)’s Hay Point Coal Terminal facing several months of restricted export capacity and forced extensive work-around arrangements.
On 28 December, Ship Loader No 1 struck a crane on board the Panamanian-flag, 52,466 dwt VEGA PIONEER operated by Koyo Line of Japan. The 2002-built ship was undamaged, but the 5000 tph loader had to be taken out of service for repairs, cutting the terminal’s capacity by 30 per cent....
