After a competitive tender process against rivals Xstrata Coal, White Mining and Mitsubishi, BHP Billiton (BHPB) has won the rights to explore for coal in a section of northern New South Wales near Gunnedah.
BHPB has told the NSW government that it will invest A$2 bn in capital works and infrastructure if reserves are sufficient for a viable mining operation, which seems assured, given estimates of 500 mt of coal in the 3500 km2 exploration area....
