Minera Isla Riesco SA, a 50:50 joint venture of Copec (Angelini) and Ultramar (Von Appen) has revealed a project to build a port on Riesco Island in Magallanes (Chile’s XII region), at a cost of US$50M, in connection with their plan to mine sub-bituminous coal on the sparsely-populated, 5000 km2 Riesco island.
The load-out facility would be able to accommodate colliers up to 140,000 dwt. It would cater for up to 43 ship calls/year and ship 6 mtpa of coal, mainly for generators in northern and central Chile, although eventually some coal may be exported....
