Canadian-backed Waratah Coal has seen its A$5.3B Alpha project in central Queensland effectively halted after federal environment minister Peter Garrett blocked the company’s plans for a rail line to and a new port at Shoalwater Bay, north of Rockhampton.
Waratah, which is Torontolisted and proposing to dual-list in Australia, announced its intentions in mid-July and received Queensland Government’s ‘significant project’ backing for the mine, which envisaged producing some 25 mtpa of thermal coal in the Galilee Basin....
