The Tanzanian parliament is expected to pass new mining legislation in June to encourage the development of Tanzania’s coal and uranium reserves. The existing mining law was introduced in the 1990s and turned the country into the third biggest gold producer in Africa, so the government now hopes to replicate that success with the country’s other mineral reserves.
The changes will include a simplified licensing process and new royalty structure. While some coal output is likely to be consumed domestically in power generation, new rail and port capacity will be required to enable export further afield....
