Pressure is growing for the construction of a new railway to enable the export of coal from South Africa’s Waterberg Basin. With production falling at many established mines in Mpumalanga Province, mining companies are increasingly focusing on the largely untapped Waterberg reserves to maintain output and have called for the development of a new railway to the area.
The main question centres on whether the railway will be constructed to the east, to Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT); to the west, to Walvis Bay in Namibia; or whether there will be sufficient demand for both projects....
