The Latvian port of Riga, the largest operator of Russia’s coal exports to Europe, is planning to increase its annual handling capacity from last year’s 30 mtpa to 50 mtpa by 2013.
Occupying a total area of 6.348ha on the Daugava’s banks, Riga port currently has a quayage of 13.818m and maximum alongside depths of 12.2m. According to the port’s general manager Leonid Loginov, the port is about to deepen and widen its 17km long approach canal and water area (to 12-16m) to make them accessible to Panamax ships....
