Xstrata has said that production of its thermal coal increased 13% to a record 82.6 mt in 2009. This is as a result of the inclusion of 10.5 mt from the Colombian Prodeco operations, acquired in March, combined with increased volumes at the highly productive Newlands Northern Underground mine in Queensland as a result of improved geological conditions, the mining group said.
