SA exports threatened by derailment

RBCT full year exports are likely to take a hit following the recent derailment of a 200-wagon train that closed both lines to the terminal. According to reports, up to 1 mt could be lost.

A total of 46 wagons loaded with coal were reported to have derailed in the Camden-Overvaal area. Earlier, the estimate had been of 42 wagons and it had been unknown if they were empty or not.

Stocks of coal at RBCT are fairly high at about 3.8 mt and rail capacity is estimated at about 200,000t a day. While no immediate delays to ship loadings as a result of the derailment were expected, impact could be felt on full-year shipments as much of the lost tonnage may not be recovered.
