Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and Kansai Electric Power Co. (KEPCO) have reached an agreement on the use of a bulk carrier to transport coal.
The coal will be shipped to KEPCO’s Maizuru power plant, which plans to start its second generator in August 2010 and anticipates needing twice the amount of coal that is currently used.
NYK will provide KEPCO with a new 88,000 DWT bulk carrier, which will be delivered in 2010 from Imabari Shipbuilding Co., and transport coal mainly from Australia to the power plant.
NYK is one of the world's leading transportation companies. The NYK Group operates approximately 777 major ocean vessels, as of the end of March 2008, as well as fleets of planes, trains, and trucks. The company's shipping fleet includes around 286 bulk carriers.
